Founder Story

Siju George

Siju George’s journey to becoming the founder of the Newry Indian Arts Club — and the creative force behind Newry Mela — began long before he arrived in Northern Ireland. Born and raised in Kerala, India, lovingly known as God’s Own Country, Siju grew up surrounded by the rhythms, colours, and traditions of classical dance. From a young age, he trained with dedication, eventually becoming a professional classical dancer and choreographer whose performances carried the spirit of his culture to audiences near and far.

When Siju moved to Newry, he brought more than his artistic talent. He carried a deep belief that culture has the power to connect people. Working as a professional nurse in the health sector, he witnessed firsthand how compassion, communication, and understanding can transform lives. These experiences shaped his leadership — calm, empathetic, and community‑driven — and strengthened his desire to create spaces where everyone feels seen and valued.

What began as small cultural gatherings soon grew into something much larger. Siju recognised that Newry was becoming increasingly diverse, yet many communities lacked opportunities to share their heritage. With determination and a clear vision, he founded the Newry Indian Arts Club, a place where culture, creativity, and community could flourish together.

From this foundation, Newry Mela was born — a celebration of music, dance, food, and unity. Under Siju’s guidance, the festival has grown into one of the region’s most vibrant multicultural events, bringing thousands of people together each year. His leadership continues to inspire volunteers, artists, and families, creating a festival that reflects the richness of Newry’s communities.

Today, Siju is recognised not only as a cultural leader but as a bridge‑builder — someone who speaks up for minority ethnic communities, champions inclusion, and works tirelessly to ensure that everyone has a place in Newry’s cultural story. His journey from Kerala to Newry is a testament to how one person’s passion can spark a movement that brings people together.
